Vestry nomination process
NOTE: The nomination process has closed for this year; we're leaving this information in place so that you can see the process used to select six nominees.
Six new vestry members are elected at the annual parish meeting each year. Prior to that meeting, parishioners are invited to submit names to the nominating committee. The nominating committee consists of the retiring members of the vestry and six at-large members, including the committee chair, who are appointed by the vestry. This year's committee co-chairs are David Hodge and Anne McElroy, who are concluding their three-year terms on the vestry. Additional members of the nominating committee are:
At-large members
Kathryn Angus
Richard Kay
Joan Putney
Brandon Spalding
Lauren Turner
Outgoing members of the vestry
Penn Rogers
Martha Sherman
Dick Hamrick
Nancy Thompson
Nomination process
Parishioners are invited to suggest people to the nominating committee for their consideration.
- The deadline to submit a suggestion is November 12.
- The committee will consider a number of factors when composing the slate, including ensuring diversity in the vestry and maintaining a balance of men and women.
- To suggest someone to the committee, please complete this form after securing permission from the person you suggest.
- The potential nominee is asked to complete this form to assist the nominating committee in their deliberations. If the person is ultimately nominated by the vestry nominating committee, she or he will also be asked to submit a head-and-shoulders photo to the parish communications staff.
Nominees should meet the following qualifications:
- should be qualified according to the Canons (a confirmed member who is known to the treasurer);
- should have demonstrated a level of commitment to St. Stephen’s which is appropriate to vestry service, including giving a tithe (10 percent of income) or working meaningfully toward the tithe; attending worship weekly; and engaging in the ministries of St. Stephen's;
- should have the ability to be a constructive and unifying influence even when working with those of different viewpoints; and
- should not be the spouse, sibling, parent or child of a member of the nominating committee, nor have served on St. Stephen’s vestry for at least three years.
Those elected at the annual meeting (February 4, 2024) will serve from February 2024 through the annual meeting of 2027.
Current vestry members are listed here.
The nominating committee will strive to present a slate of six women and men who not only meet the criteria listed above, but whose backgrounds, involvement at St. Stephen's Church, length of membership, ages, and other attributes will provide a helpful balance on the vestry, including the 12 men and women who will continue to serve.
