Art exhibits
Beauty as expressed in the visual—flowers, stained glass, needlepoint kneelers, to name a few examples—is deeply appreciated by this community of faith. One way we honor this beauty is by showcasing the work of a variety of artists. In the Café at St. Stephen’s, we rotate exhibits by artists groups and guilds, student artists, professional artists, and gifted parishioners. Similarly, parishioners display their work in the Gallery, a space adjacent to the large fellowship hall. Finally, the May Fair House dedicates a room—called the Art Annex—to the sale of work by local artists and artisans.
In March and April 2024, the Café @ St. Stephen’s will hang a new display featuring a range of art forms.
Todd Dixon, photography printed on acrylic
Todd has been an avid local bird watcher for many years, and with his wife, has traveled extensively with binoculars and a camera. In recent years, two of his favorite trips have been to Tanzania and the Galapagos Islands. This is his first time exhibiting his work.
Mary Catherine Dunn, watercolor
Mary Catherine has been a member of St. Stephen’s Church for over 30 years and taught at St. Christopher’s School. She has been painting for about 12 years.
Laura Heyward, oils
Laura holds a degree in art education and has taught at Cat’s Cap, Collegiate After School, Richmond Public Schools, and Virginia Union University. She has been painting for more than 40 years and likes the problem-solving that needs to happen for her to like the final outcome.
Beth B. Jasper, oils, charcoal, ink
A native of Hampton, Virginia, Beth graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BFA in painting and printmaking and now lives and works in Richmond. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is in multiple private collections. Drawing has been a lifelong outlet for her imagination and she does not want to be confined to any one medium, genre or subject. She works with oils, charcoal, ink (often homemade from natural materials), scratchboard, photography, digital media, and ceramics.
Sara Mackey, weaving
Sara is active in the Celtic service at St. Stephen’s. You may have noticed some of her work already around the café. She works with natural fibers to create fun and joyful framed weavings.
Edward (“Ted”) Peck, photography
Ted is a clinical neuropsychologist, specializing in the brain and behavior. Photography is a means of extending what our brain sees into what it processes emotionally and then sharing that evocative moment with the viewer. His award-winning photos hang in numerous private collections and commercial venues such as restaurants and stores.
On display in the Gallery at this time is a collection of paintings by artist, teacher, and St. Stephen’s parishioner Elizabeth Scholder. The pieces are done in a variety of styles, including several with spiritual imagery and themes. More about the exhibit and the artist can be found in a statement posted with the exhibit, and on her website, thesedaysart.com.
